pattern RS

preconceived idea/notion, presupposition, assumption, presumption, prejudgement, expectation, prepossession; prejudice, bias; Frenchparti pris.

Preconceptions were not useful when I drew this pattern a few years ago.

A lot of future planning is based on preconceptions which is based on habits from the past… stuff we know, feel unchallenged by and sadly, stuff we know will sell.

Step by step

Step by step…. 19.08.15.

This series is part of a larger one, the last part of a larger one.

I can see a lot of artistic influences in this and I like the way meaning is left open…fast small compositions which make me wonder what the hell is going on here.

Title, who knows?

-Step by step….or

-A Systemic method to tackle the problem of artistic exploration into the Unknown……or

-How to have fun again without the bureaucrats.

Street conversation about the merits of Cartesian grid or the heuristic process of proportional diagram design.

29 July 2015:

Two drawings, one freehand showing a street scene with a conversation happening between two people on balconies on opposite sides of the alley way. What are they talking about? The merits of the Cartesian grid of the paving below?

Or what comes next in the void at the end of the street, or maybe making plans for big RUGBY match, or maybe they are discussing the pros and cons of the trial and error,  proportional diagram below….

Is it a plan? Is it a house, a city, a detail, a part, a whole, a copy, some abstract nonsense that has no real value (unlike real estate) ?

The  conversation continues to flow in and out and around and around the subject matter, passing their opinions between themselves; fast and true.

Just like practising passes before the big game.

This photo from 1865 appears so real to me and a perfect antidote to the ubiquitous award winning, resale(able), innovative, creative, profit driven environments we swamp ourselves in these days.

Modus operandi

Sunday 24.05.15

This post is specifically for all our neuroscientist friends.

I love the words ‘modus operandi’ and the idea that we each have one, one specific to each of us and one, when we recognise it, is like the most comfortable garment that each of us could ever wear.

When modus operandi is truly purring along, is in the sweet zone, is singing from the heart, then we start to play, play in realms where there are no rules, no actions of prescriptive origin, no, no, no, no, no none of that. Only the wonderful freedom to simply scribble and wonder and marvel at that  ability and that opportunity to scribble and to enjoy that.

Here endth the lesson …

The tweaked wall reveals free choice and play.

Very, very simple operations repeated.

Meld and a quiet struggle

Screen Shot 2015-05-02 at 5.09.43 pm

May 2 2015 drawing is a picture that records some sort of dialogue. A record of a series of conversations some of which go nowhere and some have a loose connection to other parts.

I like the idea that different characters can pop in on the picture when they want to: there is no exclusion in this pictorial world so a couple beating the fog are ok. The arm chair thinker wondering what to do with his hands is ok too.

Also when the subject matter has no leash, it wanders and other ideas are free to pop in.  This drawing reveals several ideas for me to think about. They can be found middle bottom and bottom right (the green bit).

The middle bottom bit is a flotilla of simple bench seats with a person at either end. Interspersed between these seats are sheep…. the whole image reminded me of suburbia and not necessarily in a negative way; just the quiet struggle of the whole set up.

The green bit also has a quiet struggle about it, but deeper in a world of melded nature and artefact; endless bubbling currents constantly changing. The green bit, for some reason that I am unclear about, reminded me of the Rosetta Stone. The stone has the same text in all three scripts.  It provided the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs.

(If hasn’t already happened, maybe it’s time for the Brits to return the Stone to Egypt.)
